How to find restaurants where Koreans eat
Many Koreans look up restaurants in Korean map apps such as Naver Map, not Google Maps. Search where they search, and you'll find the places locals actually go.
Open a place in Naver Map & KakaoMapSearch in Naver Map
- Naver Map shows visitor reviews and photos for most restaurants. A place with many reviews from Korean visitors is a good sign.
- Since October 2024, Naver Map translates reviews into English, Japanese and Chinese, so you can read what Korean diners say.
- Found a restaurant in Google Maps or on a blog? Paste the Google Maps link or the name into Gilchi and tap Naver Map to see the same place there.
Before you go
- Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner (a "break time"), and some close one day a week. Check the opening hours in Naver Map.
- Popular places can have long lines. The CATCH TABLE app lets you book or join some waitlists remotely, without a Korean phone number.
Ordering
- At some restaurants, especially Korean barbecue and hot pot, you have to order at least two servings. Some do not accept solo diners at all.
- If you are on your own, ask before you sit down (see the phrases below).
- Many places take orders at a kiosk or a tablet on the table. Side dishes usually come with the meal, and water is often self-service.
